PHILIPI-A PLACE OF CONTRAST

Phillipi Township

Philippi is an enormous and diverse township housing all sorts of cultures, houses and businesses. Driving past the informal and formal structures that exist side by side, one would never imagine that in the depths of this township, lays a unique scenic rural landscape.

A sandy dirt track leading away from the clustered houses will take you to Klipfontein, an important artery which links the gritty neighborhood to the mountain range.  The space here is inhibited by large gum tree which sprawl across the mass of agricultural land, and an approximate 220 houses loosely scattered along sandy paths.

Klipfontein is truly a rural post in an urban setting which, unbeknown to many Cape Town residents, offers relaxing and fun activities.

Here are 5 places to visit and things to do in Philippi

  1. If you’re a history junkie, I suggest you visit the Old German Complex built in 1897.  . The complex, mashed in-between tall gum and palm trees, was built by German Zionists who used it as a spiritual home. Today the church has been converted into a museum reflecting, the community’s way of life in earlier times.
  2. The Edith Stephan’s Wetland, known for its fern like plant , is one of the few protected natural environments in the Cape Flats. The reserve is home to the rare dune thicket, the white backed duck, ibises and egrets. The reserve is a definite must see for nature lovers and birdwatchers.
  3. For horse ridding fanatics, Philippi has ideal scenic avenues which meander through the dunes into the beach.
  4. Visit the coastal dune area where the last intact dunes in the area are present.
  5. Go to the Old Cement Factory which has been transformed into a vibrant tourist destination. Every Saturday arts, crafts, live music and organic foods can experienced under one roof.

If the above list isn’t enough motivation for you to visit Philippi, then think about the profound effect that tourism may have on improving the quality of life for the people living in the area!
